The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023 held in Delhi in December was a momentous event, bringing together AI experts and leaders from across the globe under one roof, including tech leaders in AI and Machine Learning such Google, Meta, AWS, Intel, IBM along with AI startups, and international organizations including the OECD and UNESCO.

I joined this international forum as a Phronesis Partners’ representative to find out more about the fast-evolving world of AI and its implications for the future. Below are some of the highlights from the Summit:

The New Delhi Declaration on AI

The New Delhi Declaration on AI, endorsed by 29 member countries, and announced at the Summit provides a unified vision for AI’s future with a global commitment to collaborative and inclusive AI governance. This marked a significant milestone in the development of AI, particularly in sectors like healthcare and agriculture.

Responsible AI as a global priority

One key takeaway from the Summit was the agreed need for a commitment to responsible AI. There were therefore discussions on ethical AI practices, transparency, and the development of mechanisms to identify AI-generated content, all of which are vital to foster a trustworthy worldwide AI ecosystem.

The global transformation of education

A standout theme was the impact of AI on education. The potential for AI to enhance learning experiences and accessibility worldwide offers exciting prospects for the future of education by broadening access and effectiveness, through innovations such as adaptive learning software and virtual reality.

Data governance and the future of work

Insights into data governance and AI’s influence on the workplace highlighted the need for robust, globally applicable policies that balance innovation with ethical considerations and responsible use.

Global business innovation

The Summit highlighted the scope for innovation and the commercialization of AI to revolutionize business models and services. This will be critical for market research firms like Phronesis which operate globally and are exploring the potential of integrating AI into research methodologies.

Development and inclusivity

The GPAI’s commitment to global cooperation and inclusivity is a step towards democratizing the benefits of AI and is aimed at ensuring it is accessible and benefits diverse populations, globally.

The Summit recognized the need for advanced computing capabilities to support research and development in AI, and the development of more robust and innovative AI solutions on a global scale, which is crucial for the continuous evolution of AI technologies.

The Summit highlighted the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to AI innovation through collaborations involving AI startups as well as large corporations, academia, and government bodies, reflecting the importance of AI for the future.
