08 OCTOBER 2021: TECHNOLOGY

New York announced ‘MITRE Engenuity Open Generation 5G Consortium’ to deploy 5G connectivity for the 50-mile drone corridor between Syracuse and Rome cities

  • The Governor of New York announced that New York State’s 50-Mile drone corridor between the cities of Syracuse and Rome will host a 5G test network for Unmanned Aircraft, the first such initiative taken by any US state
  • The move is expected to transform commercial and private drone use, presenting a new turning point for the sector’s ongoing development in the state
  • The drone corridor, with support from NUAIR (Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research), will have an experimentation hub dedicated to 5G testing and long-range flight paths

 

05 OCTOBER 2021: DEFENSE

AT&T signed a 21 year deal with US Air Force for deployment of FirstNet service at 15 bases

  • AT&T, an American telecommunications company, entered into an agreement with Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) to provide FirstNet service on 15 Air Force bases
  • The agreement forms part of the first few steps taken by the US Air Force to improve network coverage at the bases
  • Under the agreement AT&T will build new infrastructure at the first 15 sites selected by the US Air Force to use FirstNet that will have access to deployable assets, including 100+ land-based and airborne portable cell sites

 

29 SEPTEMBER 2021: AVIATION

Air France partnered with Intelsat for leveraging its capabilities for in-flight connectivity

  • Air France, France’s flag carrier airline, has entered into a partnership with Intelsat for installing  their 2Ku high-speed, satellite-based’ in-flight connectivity solution on 60 new twinjet Air France A220-300 aircraft. It is expected to launch and come into service by the end of October 2021
  • The aircraft with Intelsat connectivity will fly to short-to-medium stop destinations in the Air France network
  • Including this move for the aviation industry, Intelsat has further plans for investing $2 billion in the development of a unified global 5G network that would support next-gen mobility, connectivity and internet of things (IoT)

 

29 SEPTEMBER 2021: INFRASTRUCTURE

OVHcloud US has been selected by Peachtree Corners for real-world smart city applications

  • OVHcloud, a leading global cloud services provider, and Peachtree Corners, one of the first few 5G smart cities in the US powered by real-world connected infrastructure, have collaborated to enhance and promote innovation across the smart city by using OVHcloud’s global cloud infrastructure
  • Under the collaboration, Peachtree Corners’ 5G smart city and select technology partners will be able to manage, analyze, gain critical insights and make informed decisions
  • OVHcloud’s offerings will include computation, storage, and other cloud platform resources for Peachtree Corners and Curiosity Lab Innovation Centre members

 

23 SEPTEMBER 2021: MINING

AngloGold Ashanti announced collaboration with Nokia for trial of 5G mining

  • As the mining industry moves into the digital age, AngloGold Ashanti, a global mining company, has initiated an underground 5G mining trial in Colombia under a new partnership with Nokia
  • The introduction of 5G connectivity in the mining sector could boost the economy of the Columbian nation by up to $11.4 billion between 2021-2035
  • The move is a first-of-its-kind drive in the mining sector, where an industrial-grade 5G private wireless network has been deployed for the trial along with the latest Nokia AirScale 5G portfolio in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band, offering ultra-wideband connectivity

 

22 SEPTEMBER 2021: DEFENSE

US Air Force Reserve Command plans to expand and strengthen 5G connectivity at its bases

  • To expand its 5G connectivity, Verizon Public Sector has been selected by the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) to deliver a 5G footprint at its bases
  • The network provider will be in charge of the installation of the 5G Ultra Wideband mobility service at 7 AFRC bases in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas, where C-band radios will be rooted outside at the AFRC facilities
  • The additional capacity of 4G and 5G will enable reservists at the bases to work more efficiently with higher speeds, more bandwidth and lower latency

 

22 SEPTEMBER 2021: AGRICULTURE

CNH Industrial announced plans to work with 5G Open Innovation Lab on 5G technologies for transformation in the agricultural sector

  • CNH Industrial, an American-Italian agricultural machinery company, will work with the 5G Open Innovation Lab, a global ecosystem for enterprises, carriers and technology leaders working together to make 5G a reality, as the first industry partner in manufacturing and agriculture
  • The partnership is expected to enhance CNHI’s precision farming portfolio through the development of innovative connected digital technologies
  • The 5G Open Innovation Lab is expected to serve CNH Industrial as a dynamic testing platform to pilot digital farming solutions for its customers with its first application development field lab launched recently for the agricultural industry, which has dedicated access to a 5G-capable, CBRS LTE private network and edge computing platform

 

20 SEPTEMBER 2021: AVIATION

Malaysia Airports collaborated with Maxis for creation of Malaysia’s first 5G Digital Airport

  • Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has entered into a strategic partnership with Maxis Bhd to co-develop a digital transformation road map for Smart Airport operations to manage and streamline Malaysia Airport’s connectivity services via a single operator model
  • The step has been taken as the partnership plans to leverage combined expertise of both operators to develop solutions for a Smart Airport experience using 5G connectivity
  • Under the partnership, Maxis will handle all the Wi-Fi and 5G-related network services and solutions for both terminals at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
